That Stephanie may well be the one that flooded my forum with a duck tails attack many months ago - careful with some of them, as in the case of this one, s0ome details resembled a person I knew

Right now, My forum is getting attack with duck tailss links or pics and my staff is on the aletr about the spamming.  They will send me PMS about the spammer and tell me what aaccount to ban and I will ban the email, ip and username.

I am so screm about losing my forum because the attacks I am taking on the forum.

Lately, there have been people who sign up at many. many forums and do not post. It is believed that they are harvesting email addresses...you have to register to get that info for most forums.

My suggestions are to not let anyone who does not post a certain amount of messages have access to other users personal info.

Tell your users to not post personal info on the site like email addresses.

Use mods to stop bots and spammers.

If you are having a problem with someone who keeps registering on your site after banning them use the server to ban them instead of just in smf and then report them. Investigate their ip, website, email, etc. to find out who and where they are and report them.

However, remember...not all users who do not post are bots or spammers. Some are just shy or do not have anything to say yet.

I've been around as a regular visitor of this website for a good while. One day I registered for an account simply cause I felt that somehow I was already a forummember. 
It might not be the right time for me to rise and shine so I'll keep reading posts till I'll finally feel I do have something good and useful to say.

well i have now put my forum to "approval for registration" now.. i caught a hacker on one of my demo sites (why would anyone sign up on a site that says "demo" or "test" on it?? duh?? lol good idea to reopen thi9s thread.. and Merry Christmas everybody!!!

Well, at my place we have restricted others' profiles to be viewable only by admin and global mods.  The Who's Online and Stats page ae also restricted - all but one actually applauded this - the one is on a futile 'protest'.

No ordinary members can use the PM system (VIPs and above can).

No one has complained about it.

Despite this, a known spammerand banned member - 'Dustin', renamed as 'Yarp' rejoined and got to 20 odd posts before we booted him out (and do not lecture me about giving chances, I gave him dozens of chances - no more)

Make sure you ban using every trigger, especially ip. Then report them.

Hackers are about this holiday season with a vengence! Been finding them on a lot of sites. Guests are using this.

Look for "*.txt???" or something similar in your forum error log. The " * " is for any file name. This is a known Joomla/Mambo exploit and may work on site that are not secured even if they do not use it.

Ban them from the server and set your Newbie group to not be able to view users info. This is for email harvesters. People who sign up and don't do anything...they may be stealing the email addresses of your members. Registered users usually have access to that info.

So, create a separate group and put your known users into it.

Most of the hackers seem to be from Russia, etc. Use this mod to help you find out where they are via using Users Online and Track IP: http://www.marook-online.de/smf/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item30
